What more can be said about the genius that is Luciana Aymar? She is without question one of the finest players to have graced the women’s game. This brilliant attacking midfielder made her debut for Argentina against The Netherlands in the 1998 World Cup, and has never looked back.
Luciana Aymar claimed an incredible fourth FIH ‘World Player of the Year' award in 2007 having previously won the coveted prize in 2001, 2004 and 2005.
She lists Diego Maradona as an idol, but her pace, vision and superb ball control on the hockey pitch have led to her being universally acknowledged as 'La Maga' (the magician). She has also played club hockey for Rot-Weiss Köln in Germany and Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, Spain.
Aymar's lists of trophy wins with Las Leonas is impressive - three consecutive Pan American Games titles, the 2001 Champions Trophy and the 2002 World Cup as well as an Olympic silver in 2000 and Champions Trophy runners-up medals in 2002 and 2007.
At the Champions Trophy in 2008, Aymar stole the show with a number of sensational performances to reach the final where they crushed Germany 6-2 in Mönchengladbach. Anything is possible when Aymar is on form, including the prospect of a first Olympic title for Argentina.
